Save Energy

Four ideas to save energy in the home
It is estimated that around 16% of energy use in the home is energy loss. That is, it is not doing any productive work for you at all! Here are some ideas to save substantial amounts of energy.
1. Insulate your home – insulate your loft with nice thick padding and stop heat loss from your roof, insulate your cavity your cavity walls and stop heat loss through your walls, and stop heat leakage through draughts. Do you have cold air leaking down from your loft cover? Round your doors or windows? Stop this heat escaping by plugging the gaps.
2. Turn down your thermostat – every degree you turn down the heat then it is estimated that you save up to 3% of heating costs. Switch off your central heating when you don’t need it. Turn the radiators off or down in rooms you don’t use. Open the curtains and use the sun to heat rooms. Put on a cardigan or sweater.
3. Use less hot water – take showers not baths and limit the time you let the hot tap run when washing your hands. Wash in cold water and save up to 80% of the energy used by washing your clothes. Even washing in lower temperatures of 30 degrees will save a great deal. Every so often wash bedding in water at 60 degrees to ensure dust mites are removed.
4. Save energy costs by installing solar panels. Generating your own electricity from the free energy from the sun is the most effective way of reducing energy costs and cutting emissions. The disadvantage is the relatively high capital cost though investments will be paid back over time, especially with the Governments Feed In Tariff arrangements. Check the issues with experienced solar energy companies such as SEHBAC Solar Panels.
Carbon Footprint

Reduce your carbon footprint: eat local
Large amounts of food being transported all over the world uses immense amounts of energy, and though slower-moving shipping uses slightly less energy it can’t be used for quick ripening goods. Those sticks of asparagus that you eat out of season will have been flown in and add a premium, not just of cost, but [...]

What is your carbon footprint?
Your carbon footprint is the measure of the impact you and your family’s lifestyle is having on greenhouse gas production. Many of your day to day activities are sending greenhouse gases into the air every day and adding to the environmental problems rapidly building up on the earth. If you drive a car (or more [...]
Sustainable Living

Sustainable living ideas
As many of us become more aware and concerned about the environment then it is not surprising that the recognition of the need to develop a more sustainable lifestyle becomes clear. We all of us now do know about recycling and local councils make provision for it. But there are a range of other things [...]

Take “slow” holidays without flying
There are other ways of travelling than getting on a plane – and flying can be so stressful: crowds of people, endless queues that barely move, being squashed in a small seat for hours, and arriving frazzled. Many of us don’t really like flying at all. Given the high usage of fossil fuel by aeroplanes, [...]
